Less than 7 years separated JF Kennedy’s speech “We choose to go to the Moon” (Houston, September 1962) fixing the goal to go to the moon and the Apollo 11 lunar landing in July 1969! This goal was revealed a little bit earlier (May 1961) at the US Congress, thus it took roughly 8 years from the political goal to the achievement on the moon. 8 years were roughly necessary from the beginning of the project to the first launch in 2008. The dockings were made with a very high accuracy and with a high level of safety. The ATV was able to make a rendezvous and dock to the International Space Station in a fully automatic way.

I had the opportunity to work in the engineering team in charge of the most complex European space vehicle ever made: the Automated Transfer Vehicle. I discovered later what were the space conquest and the Apollo program.

It may have triggered something in me that led to choose my job: aerospace engineer. Standing in front of the TV, I understood that this kind of plane was returning from space, and it was for the first time in history. When I was 11 years old I watched the first space shuttle landing live on the television during its maiden flight. We can find also a lot of web sites, lately there is one dedicated to the 50th anniversary:Ī few words on the Apollo program challenge And of course the NASA Apollo mission reports, see for instance the Apollo 11 mission report : Īll these books are of particular interests … but they are only books.
